When it comes to assists, there's only one winner. Lionel Messi has consistently produced elite playmaking numbers throughout his career.
Messi has registered 418 assists in 1,164 appearances, while Ronaldo has recorded 261 assists in 1,330 matches.
That doesn't diminish Ronaldo's achievements. His creativity has still been exceptional, especially during his years with Real Madrid and Manchester United.
In the UEFA Champions League, Ronaldo actually edges Messi with 41 assistscompared to 40 assists.
Overall, however, Messi remains the superior creatorbased on total assists, chances created, and overall playmaking impact.
The passing stats point to a clear winner in this category: Lionel Messi. But again, Ronaldo's passing abilities are often underestimated.
In the games we have this data for, Messi has made 2,107 key passes, whilst Ronaldo has made 1,309 key passes.
Messi also dominates the throughball statistics, making 545 successful throughballs, compared to Ronaldo's 89 successful throughballs.

Ronaldo has won the Puskas award for best goal in a calendar year, whereas Messi has so far failed to win this award despite being nominated 7 times. Messi has however won the World Cup Golden Ball on two occasions (2014 and 2022). He has also been named Copa America's Best Player on two occasions, and Best Young Player once.
In terms of trophies, Messi has the overall lead, with 46 trophies to Ronaldo's 35 trophies (including Messi's 2008 Olympic triumph and 2005 U-20 World Cup).
